Shannon warmed her hands before the glowing fire and felt even more warmed by the intensity of the gaze of the man across the room. The fact that she had done this reckless thing—this second reckless thing, she reminded herself, was astounding enough of itself. Worse, she was almost shaking with the anticipation of what lay ahead.

At heart, she must be a harlot, she decided, staring at the leaping flames of the fire.

"Would you like some brandy?” The question was low, his voice deep and smooth.

"Please.” She swallowed and found somehow the courage to turn and look at him.

He must have had the glasses poured for he already crossed the room to hand her the delicate crystal, the deep amber liquid catching the light. His dark eyes were shaded by long lashes as he looked at her, and he offered courteously, “Let me take your cloak, my lady."

Letting him slip it from her shoulders, she gratefully took a sip of her drink, the liquid sliding sensuously down her throat. An instant fire formed in her stomach and she relaxed a fraction. Insanity this all may be, but she was here now, and so was the luscious Viscount Cheviot, and sinking into a chair by the fire, she couldn't help but sneak a quick look at his big bed.

And remember sitting here on the edge, her legs spread wide as he...?

What else did that bed have to offer?

His whispered remark lingered in her ears like an incantation.

She was intrigued.

Fascinated by his carnal promise.

"I am simply curious, but why did you stay the other night instead of disabusing me of my notion that someone had hired you to seduce me?"

The question, asked so quietly and breaking into her internal contemplation, made her start. Devlin had settled into the chair next to her, his long legs extended casually, his gaze steady over the rim of his glass.

Shannon took a moment, and then answered simply, “I suppose for the same reason I am here now, my lord."

"And what reason is that?"

"The chance to be someone else entirely, even if only for a few hours.” Her smile was fleeting.

"Yet you fiercely protect your role as the virtuous widow."

"Not all of us can flaunt public opinion, my lord."

"Wealth,” he agreed cynically, “does make for a great deal of social latitude. That being said, and your circumstances as they are, why didn't you take the money I left the other night?"

Shannon looked into her glass, the fragrance of the brandy heady and intoxicating. “You could no more reward me than you could hire me, my lord. I am not a whore. I am here tonight of my free will, because I wish it."

His reply was hushed. “I wish it also. Very much. It is not my practice to play the detective and pursue beautiful, reckless ladies who steal into my bedchamber uninvited then vanish like a puff of smoke the next morning after a night of unbridled pleasure.
